It started when an airline lost all my suitcases.
I'd just moved to London. New city, new corporate job in the City, and my entire wardrobe was somewhere between the departure gate and baggage claim. I needed clothes — not "fast fashion to tide me over" clothes, but pieces I'd actually keep. Real wardrobe staples.
I'd turned 30 that summer. Something shifted — I was done buying throwaway pieces and ready to actually invest in a wardrobe that worked. I went down the colour analysis rabbit hole and discovered I was an Autumn. I knew my palette. I knew the shades that made my skin glow and the ones that washed me out. I even knew which necklines suited me. In theory, shopping should have been easy.
It was not easy.
I had 23 browser tabs open. COS, Arket, Sézane, Reiss, Massimo Dutti, &Other Stories — jumping between sites, mentally filtering out every piece that wasn't in my palette. When I finally found a beautiful rust knit, I'd check the label and discover it was 60% polyester. Or I'd find the perfect merino crew neck in espresso, but the neckline would hit at the widest point of my bust, making me look broader instead of better.
The moment that broke me was my Abercrombie sweater. I'd loved it — the colour was right, the fit was right, it felt soft in the shop. Two months later it was covered in pills. I actually bought a Philips fabric shaver to rescue it. I was standing in my kitchen, shaving bobbles off a £65 jumper, thinking: this can't be right.
I needed new clothes for my new life, and I couldn't find a single place that let me search by my colour season, check the fabric quality, and filter for my body shape. So I started building one.
— Raven, FounderThat's what Tonal is. One place where every piece is fabric-checked — we read the label, check the fibre percentages, and rate it honestly. Every piece is colour-matched to the 12-season system. And every piece is tagged for neckline, waistline, and body shape — so you can filter for what actually works on your body, not just what looks good on the model.
We're starting with Autumn (because that's my season and I can personally vouch for every colour), but we're expanding to all 12 sub-seasons. The goal is simple: save you from the 23 tabs, the label-checking, the pilling, and the decision fatigue.
No fast fashion. No hidden synthetics. No more standing in your kitchen with a fabric shaver wondering where it all went wrong.
Meet Raven
Moved to London, lost her suitcases, and rebuilt her wardrobe the hard way. Dark Autumn. Personally checks every product that goes on the site. Believes you shouldn't need 23 open tabs to find one good piece — just someone willing to do the work for you.
What we believe:
🏷️ Read the label
If a brand won't tell you what's in it, don't buy it. We check every fibre percentage and rate it honestly.
🎨 Colour matters
The right colour makes your skin glow. The wrong one washes you out. We don't guess — we match to the 12-season system.
✂️ Fit is personal
A V-neck on one body is completely different on another. We tag every piece for neckline, waistline, and shape.
🚫 No fast fashion
We don't curate from brands that prioritise volume over quality. Every brand on Tonal has earned its place.
